Information for parents - November/December
9th Nov 2023
Our second P1 topic is called ‘Family and Homes.’
We will be learning to talk about our families, respect different family ‘make-ups’, name exterior and interior parts of the house, discuss recycling at home, consider a home with no electricity, read traditional tales, sing action songs, role play home life and much more.
Here are some activities that you may wish to try at home to support your child’s learning at school.
- Discuss who is in your family, using words such as parent, sibling, brother, sister, aunty, uncle, cousin and grandparent.
- Recall family events and encourage your child to describe it in their own words.
- Encourage your child to ask questions about their family.
- Notice the number on your front door. Is it odd or even?
- Name exterior parts of your house. Name interior rooms in your house. Draw, paint, collage, build or label it.
- Take a walk in your local area and notice the differences between houses, e.g. shape, size, colour, material used.
- Talk to grandparents about houses in ‘the olden days.’
- Go to the library and look for books about different types of families, local houses and houses around the world.
- Talk about why we recycle at home. Task your child to sort the recycling!
- Count the appliances that use electricity in your home.
Don’t forget to have lots of fun!
