Information for Parents ~ September/October

Our first P1 topic is called ‘Marvellous Me!’ Throughout this topic we will be focusing on ourselves. There are lots of exciting activities planned for our topic. We will be learning to recognise our names, paint portraits, talk about birthdays, sing action songs, role play school life, mark make in the sand, explore water play and much more!

Here are some activities that you may wish to try at home to support your child’s learning at school.

• Share early photographs of their childhood using such questions as ‘Do you remember when?’
• Talk to your child about when they were born; mention the date, month and season.
• Show your child a calendar. Find the month of your child’s birthday and mark it. Talk about how long it is until their birthday.
• Help your child become more independent. Encourage them to practise taking their jumpers and coats on and off, and hang them up.
• Go to the library and look for books about ourselves, body parts, birthdays, the calendar and seasons.
• Visit the Ulster Museum to see what people looked like long ago. Compare ourselves and discuss what is the same and different.
• Explore the local area and forest to notice the seasonal changes. Ask your child to choose appropriate clothing for the changing weather.
